BASIC PS SETTINGS

Opening New Files & Canvas Settings

Click on File in the main menu. The first option in the drop down menu is "New". Click it and you get this:

Aside from the obvious things, such as name, width and height, you should set the Resolution for your new file. This is important for a later print output. 300 pixels/inch (as shown) is the minimum to get a fine, flawless print. If the setting is lower, you would see the dots in the print - just like in magazine or cheap poster prints. You can go higher as well, of course, but the higher you go, the smaller the actual print size will be, to ensure very high quality printing.

RGB is the most common setting to choose for your Colour Mode. There is also CYMK - which is used mainly in printing - and Greyscale, which as the name says, makes everything be in greyscale. This is often used for black and white drawings, and it also reduces the byte size of the file.

Background Contents determine the base colour of your file. You can choose between Transparent (which isn't so good for painting), White, and Background Colour.

Click OK, and your new file will open.
